Who doesn’t love hearing about the adventures of great American explorers from Lewis and Clark to our Apollo Astronauts? Admiral Richard E. Byrd, famous Virginian Explorer, is undeniably one of the greats and the Richard Byrd Library in Springfield is hosting a lecture all about him.
On Thursday, August 8 at 7:30pm, Guy Guthridge, NSF Antarctic Program veteran and Richard Byrd historian, will present an illustrated talk, Richard Byrd: Antarctic Explorer. Byrd won the Medal of Honor when he flew to the North Pole in 1926. But he didn’t stop there. In 1928 he decided to explore the never seen regions of the Antarctic from the air. By bringing technology (planes and radio) to his approach to exploring, Byrd pioneered a new way of discovering unknown lands.
