The Arlington County Police Department is holding a free event aimed at deterring automobile theft.
Professional etchers will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot of the Fort Myer Commissary, 523 Carpenter Road, on Friday, June 10.
They will etch cars' vehicle identification numbers, or VINs, on their exterior windows. The etching will not affect the vehicle's appearance, according to a police news release.

"A VIN-etched vehicle is harder to conceal when stolen, thus making it less attractive to car thieves. VIN etching also virtually eliminates any potential profit professional thieves might receive from selling windows and windshields through chop shops," the release states.
To participate, you need to bring a government-issued identification card, like a driver's license or passport.
