Project Mend-A-House has created a great contest for individuals, families, schools, teams or groups of up to five people – building popsicle houses from craft sticks. It also serves as a fundraiser for Project Mend-A-House annual signature event, Stepping It Up For Safety at the Taste of the Town, which will be held on Wednesday, October 17, at the VFW Post 1503 in Woodbridge. The funds collected will be used to help repair its clients’ homes. Participants purchase a kit with 250 craft sticks, a foam core board (10” x 15”) and a container of glue for a donation of $25.
The building which may be any type (house, barn, cabin, garage, etc.) must fit on and be attached to the foam core board. Participants may cut the popsicle sticks, but can only use the sticks in the kit (additional sticks may be purchased - 100 sticks/$10). Other glues are also acceptable.
Buildings may be painted or decorated and the outside area may be landscaped, if desired. Buildings will be judged on structural integrity, creativity and neatness (1st, 2nd and 3rd). There will also be fan favorites (1st, 2nd, 3rd and Honorable Mention) chosen at the Taste of the Town on October 17 (where the houses will serve as centerpieces). Everyone attending will receive one free ticket to vote for their favorite house. Additional tickets may be purchased that evening. All winners will receive a specially created Project Mend-A-House ribbon. To order a kit, call the Project Mend-A-House (PMAH) office at 703-792-7663.

“Making popsicle houses was always fun when I was younger,” shared Barbara Reese of BR Associates, the contest sponsor. “We hope that this project will inspire individuals, families, groups and teams together to not only do something fun, but also do something that benefits the community.”
