Eid-ul-Fitr is a joyful day for many Muslims across the globe, because it is a symbol of growth and completion of the holy month of Ramadan. On Eid, many Muslims reflect on how much they improved on a spiritual level during Ramadan and envision ways to maintain their newly built positive habits. It is also a chance to reflect on the blessings that we have such as clean clothes, flavorous meals, and good health.
When thinking about Eid, I reflect on the teachings of Islam and what the sunnah is for Eid-ul-Fitr. Sunnah is an incredibly significant part of our faith because it describes the practices of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings upon him). It was a sunnah, or practice, of the Holy Prophet to return home after Eid prayer using a different route than which he went by. This gave him the opportunity to greet and wish Muslim brothers and sisters with joy, and spread kindness on this beautiful occasion. Muslims strive to follow the Holy Prophet’s sunnah, even possibly helping those in great need or difficulty along the way.
Whether it is a problem relating to someone’s health or finance, we should always be ready to help someone out with the power that we have. This leads me to explain the importance of financial sacrifices, or Zakat, especially on the blessed day of Eid. God states in the Holy Quran, “The alms are only for the poor and the needy, and for those employed in connection therewith, and for those whose hearts are to be reconciled, and for the freeing of slaves, and for those in debt, and for the cause of Allah, and for the wayfarer — an ordinance from Allah. And Allah is All-Knowing, Wise“ (9:60). We should think about those who are less fortunate than us, who may not have the blessings that we have, and strive to be generous in financial sacrifices towards those in need. That way we are not only spreading the joy of Eid, but also love, kindness, and compassion for everyone.
