Every year, many people across the globe celebrate Mother’s or Father’s Day, days dedicated to honoring the love, support, and guidance their parents have shown. Although the occasion is meaningful, the event lasts for only a day. Islam, however, teaches us that giving priority and showing respect to our parents shouldn’t be limited to just once a year, but should rather be practiced every single day.
Think back to when you were a child, or even a few days ago. When you fell or hurt yourself, who was there with a bandage? When you were struggling with an assignment from school, who was there to help you? When you were having a hard time and needed someone to listen, who was there to console you? For most people, it is their parents that come to mind. Islam emphasizes that we should repay the same kindness and care that our parents demonstrated to us. The Holy Quran states, “And lower to them the wing of humility out of tenderness. And say, ‘My Lord, have mercy on them even as they nourished me in my childhood.’” (17:25)
Sometimes, you might get frustrated with your parents, but small acts of disrespect are discouraged. Instead, showing patience is a better way to resolve conflicts without being rude or impolite. The Holy Quran states, “Thy Lord has commanded, “Worship none but Him, and show kindness to parents. [✲]If one of them or both of them attain old age with thee, never say unto them any word expressive of disgust nor reproach them, but address them with excellent speech.” (17:24) This shows how important it is to never show our irritation to our parents, even when we are frustrated with them.

Our parents play a vital role in shaping who we are today. Islam reminds us to appreciate their sacrifices and treat them with kindness and respect. Let us hope and pray that we can show our love and gratitude to our parents not only on one occasion, but throughout our whole lives.
