Parents & Islam

Parents day

Loving and respecting our parents is not only a moral duty, it is also a commandment from God. God states in the Holy Qur’an, “Thy Lord has commanded, “Worship none but Him, and show kindness to parents. If one of them or both of them attain old age with thee, never say unto them any word expressive of disgust nor reproach them, but address them with excellent speech” (17:24). This shows us how respecting our parents deeply connects to Islam.

Our parents make many sacrifices for us throughout our lives. They provide us with food, education, and safety. They sacrifice their time and energy for us everyday and continue to do so even as we get older. It is important to follow this commandment of God, since having such loving parents is an abundant blessing from Him.

What can we do every day to show our love and respect to our parents? A simple way is to never raise our voice and speak politely with our parents. Listening to our parents is not only a strong form of respect but also a way to show how much you care about them. Another way is to help out with small household tasks. It shows how much we appreciate the blessing of having parents and it demonstrates kindness toward them.
