Road Project Update for Dale City and Beyond

Virginia Department of Transportation updates county leaders on Interstate 95 Express Lanes, U.S. 29, Interstate 66 and more.

The Prince William Board of County Supervisors recently saw a presentation from the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) showing the progress of road projects in the county. Below is the status of those projects:

· Construction of a left turn lane off Ball Ford Road onto Groveton was completed in July.

· The Interstate 95 Express Lanes should be open by early 2015. The project, which is 85 percent complete, includes three variable toll lanes between Prince William Parkway and Edsall Road and two lanes between Va. 234 and Garrisonville Road in Stafford County.

· Safety improvements to I-95 include widening the shoulder between the Fairfax county line and Stafford County to 12 feet. Other projects also include adding auxiliary lanes between Va. 234 and the truck scales off ramp between Opitz Boulevard and Prince William Parkway; and between the truck scales and Va. 234. Construction started in April 2013 and is scheduled to be completed in the summer of 2015.

· Work to widen U.S. 29 to six lanes for limited access from Interstate 66 to Virginia Oaks is underway and scheduled to be complete in the summer of 2015. The project includes taking Gallerher Road and U.S. 29 over railroad tracks and Linton Hall over U.S. 29 with bridges.

· Construction is ongoing to widen I-66 from U.S. 29 in Gainesville to U.S. 15 in Haymarket. The westbound ramp to U.S. 15 is complete. The project includes one high-occupancy toll lane and one general-purpose lane in each direction. The project completion is scheduled, and ready for traffic, for the summer of 2016.

· A project to rebuild I-66 at the U.S. 15 interchange at Haymarket is progressing. There will be a citizens meeting to unveil the new design in October 2014 with construction scheduled to begin in early 2015.

· Rights-of-way acquisitions are underway to start a project to bridge Va. 123 over U.S. 1 and the railroad tracks.

· A request for a construction bid to replace the Aden Road Bridge is expected to go out in mid-2015.

· The Northern Virginia Transportation Alliance has allocated funding for the design phase for widening U.S. 1 from four to six lanes between Featherstone Road and Mary’s Way.

· VDOT has completed surveying for a project to widen the eastbound lanes of U.S. 1 from Va. 234 from two to six lanes. Prince William County is issuing a request for proposal, or a call for bids, for the design of the project.

· Safety improvements to Dale Boulevard that are in or about to enter the design phase include improving left turn lanes and upgrading traffic signal at Lindendale Road, and adding a southbound left-turn lane at Hillendale Drive and Kaiser Court. Improvements to a traffic signal and adding sidewalks with American with Disabilities Act-accessible ramps and crosswalks at Forestdale Avenue was completed in May 2014. Construction on a similar project at Delaney Road is underway.

· Design is underway for a shared-use path, for cyclist and pedestrians, on the east side of Signal View Drive between Roseberry Farm and Manassas Drives.

· The Commonwealth Transportation Board has approved a 2.5-million study to establish a short-term plan for improving Va. 28 between the City of Manassas and I-66.

· Public meetings are being planned for a project to address future and present needs to relieve congestion on I-66 from I-495 to U.S. 15.
