Tips for exercising your dog in the summer

Routine exercise is an important part of caring for a dog. Here are some helpful pointers for the summer months.

Just like humans, dogs need exercise to stay healthy and enjoy a long life. In general, we recommend about 30 minutes of exercise every day for most dogs.

Summer is a great time to be outdoors, as long as it isn’t too hot or humid. Dogs have a much lower heat tolerance than humans do, so heatstroke is a concern and should be monitored. It;s best to walk or run with your dog early in the morning before the heat and humidity are high, and try to play in grassy areas that allow more ventilation for their feet. Playing in a sprinkler, or taking your dog for a swim are also great ways to get exercise while staying cool in the summer. Also, be sure that he or she is staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water.

Exercise can be a fun way to bond with your dog. For more tips about exercising your four-legged friend, be sure to check out this post.
