When the dust settled and the arguments ended around home plate at Frank Mann Field Monday night, the Alexandria Aces walked off with a thrilling 4-3 victory over the Vienna River Dogs.
One player who didn't walk off the diamond was Aces right fielder Mitchell Aker, who moments earlier had tagged up from third to score the game’s winning run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning.
When Aker slid under the tag of Vienna catcher Red Dowdell, six-foot-three, 225-pound starting pitcher Ronnie Glenn sprinted out of the Aces dugout, scooped up Aker, slung him over his shoulder like a bag of mulch and carried him off the field. The rest of the Aces soon joined the celebration. The River Dogs protested the call at the plate to no avail.
After a 3-0 win on the road over the Southern Maryland Nationals Wednesday, the Aces' record stands at 4-4.
The Aces play at Frank Mann Field, 3700 Commonwealth Ave., Alexandria, VA. The field is at Four Mile Run Park, next to Cora Kelly School.
