Alexandria City Attorney To Step Down
City Council will appoint an acting city attorney when James L. Banks steps down.

Alexandria City Attorney James L. Banks will resign on Sept. 7 to accept a new position, the city announced Wednesday, Aug. 22. Banks will become General Counsel of the Society for Human Resources Management, a worldwide human resources membership organization located in Alexandria.
"Working for the City of Alexandria has truly been the highlight of my career, and I will miss this work very much," said Banks in a statement. "It is with a sense of sadness that I will be leaving this very fine organization but also with a sense of excitement for a new opportunity and the challenges it will bring."
Banks was appointed by City Council in 2009 and has served in the role ever since. Some of his work included modernizing the City Charter and Code, acquiring land related to the city's Waterfront Plan and defended the City in major cases.
