Alexandria City Public Schools Offers Work For Federal Employees

Alexandria City Public Schools has substitute teaching and tutoring positions for furloughed federal workers.

ALEXANDRIA, VA—Do you or someone you know need work during the federal government shutdown? Alexandria City Public Schools announced a job fair on Wednesday, Jan. 23 from 4 p.m.-6 p.m. at George Washington Middle School, 1005 Mt Vernon Avenue, Alexandria.

Substitute teacher and tutor positions are available. Furloughed federal workers seeking temporary employment are welcome to apply. No appointment is needed. Applicants should bring a resume.

The requirements for the positions are a minimum of 48 hours of college credit, evidence of a negative tuberculin (TB) test (or chest x-ray) and a criminal background check.

The Alexandria Health Department is waiving TB screening fees. Screenings are available at the health department's immunization clinic, 4480 King Street, second floor, on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8 a.m.-11 a.m. Anyone receiving a screening should call 703-746-4960 to make an appointment.

The school district is also assisting families that may need free or reduced-price meals. Students and families can apply on the ACPS Meal Applications page. Applications will be processed in a manner dependent on families' circumstances.

Students with parents or guardians who are not receiving income must indicate their income as zero '0' or leave the field blank. For families that applied and were denied benefits this school year, they must provide documentation like proof of being affected by the government shutdown or recent pay stubs. Families affected by the shutdown are urged to contact ACPS School Nutrition Services at 703-619-8407 if the circumstances change by a return to work or pay for a furlough period.
