Alexandria Mayor Calls For Leniency On Residential Rent Payments
Mayor Justin Wilson called for voluntary actions to help multifamily renters who may struggle to pay amid the new coronavirus situation.
ALEXANDRIA, VA — Alexandria Mayor Justin Wilson is calling for action from multifamily property owners to help tenants who may struggle to pay rent during the new coronavirus outbreak.
In a letter to property owners, Wilson said illness or financial hardship related to business disruptions could make it difficult for some tenants to pay rent as April due dates approach. The mayor called for voluntary actions for tenants who are current on their rent through March.
Under the city's recommendation, tenants who will not be able to pay April rent would submit a written request explaining their situation by March 31. Property owners are asked to offer an installment plan for the April rent to be paid without fees or penalties over 12 months. The city's Office of Housing Landlord Division continues to operate and can offer assistance on developing payment plans.

Wilson also calls on property owners to not file eviction proceedings on tenants who are late paying April rent and instead refer them to the Office of Housing Landlord Division for assistance.
"We understand that complying with the City's request may exacerbate your business concerns, and we recommend that local businesses reach out to their own lenders and suppliers to pursue relief during this challenging time," reads the letter from Wilson.
