Alexandria Public Schools Announce Changes Due To New Coronavirus
Alexandria City Public Schools is planning to close through spring break as officials monitor the COVID-19 situation.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Alexandria City Public Schools will be closed beginning on Monday, March 16 in response to the new coronavirus situation. The school district will monitor the situation and is planning to resume after spring break, which ends after April 13.
"At this time, we have no confirmed cases of the coronavirus in our schools, and the Alexandria Health Department has not determined community-spread of the coronavirus in the City of Alexandria," said Superintendent Gregory C. Hutchings, Jr. in a message to families. "We have a number of staff and students who are self-quarantining and will be out for several weeks. Closures in our region are also impacting our ability to fully staff our schools."
The decision came after parents and staff expressed concerns about schools remaining open during the growing coronavirus outbreak. The Alexandria Health Department had not recommended closing of schools with no evidence of community-spread of new coronavirus in Alexandria. However, Hutchings said "multiple issues are impacting the ability for our schools to function effectively and efficiently."
