Alexandria Resident to Resign Job After Online Comments About Obama Daughters

Elizabeth Lauten told NBC News she is resigning her job as communications director for Tennessee congressman.

An Alexandria resident and member of Alexandria Young Republicans plans to resign her Capitol Hill job after making disparaging comments about the Obama daughters online, according to NBC News.

Elizabeth Lauten, communications director for U.S. Rep. Steve Fincher, R-Tenn., who lists her residence as Alexandria on Facebook, told the TV network Monday morning that her resignation is “in the works.”

Her online comments concerned the appearance and demeanor of President Obama’s daughters Sasha and Malia Obama during a ceremony pardoning the “presidential turkeys” last week.

“Dear Sasha and Malia: I get you’re both in those awful teen years, but you’re a part of the First Family,” CNN reported. “...try showing a little class. At least respect the part you play,” Lauten wrote on her Facebook page (it was later taken down).

“Rise to the occasion. Act like being in the White House matters to you. Dress like you deserve respect, not a spot at a bar,” Lauten wrote.

Lauten later apologized on Facebook (those comments were also deleted) but not in time to squelch her previous comments:

“I quickly judged the two young ladies in a way that I would never have wanted to be judged myself as a teenager,” USA Today reported she said.

...“after many hours of prayer, talking to my parents, and re-reading my words online I can see more clearly just how hurtful my words were.”

Lauten is listed as a contact for the Alexandria Young Republicans.
