Suspect is charged in the murders of three prominent Alexandria residents, including Ruthanne Lodato; sheriff is friends with her brother.

Murder suspect Charles Severance has been moved to the Arlington jail, the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office announced Monday in a news release.

Alexandria Sheriff Dana Lawhorne recently decided to move Severance to the Arlington jail and Severance’s transfer was effective Friday, Sept. 26. Severance was booked into the Alexandria jail on Monday, Sept. 15., from Loudoun County, where he was being held on a weapons charge.

Arlington Sheriff Beth Arthur agreed to hold him in their jail as a courtesy to the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Lawhorne made the decision to transfer him for several reasons. Severance has been charged with the murder of Nancy Dunning, the wife of former Alexandria Sheriff James Dunning. Severance is also charged with murder of Ruthanne Lodato and Sheriff Lawhorne is close friends with her brother, retired General District Court Judge Robert Giammittorio.

Sheriff Lawhorne has the utmost confidence in his staff to handle the incarceration of Charles Severance, as they have previously demonstrated their ability to remain professional regardless of the charges an inmate may be facing.

For example, the Alexandria Detention Center housed Zacarias Moussaoui, charged with conspiring in the September 11 terrorist attacks, for more than four years and did so without incident.

There were no issues during Severance’s time at the Alexandria jail. However, Sheriff Lawhorne wants to eliminate any possible appearance of a conflict and therefore requested that the Arlington Sheriff house Severance.
