How to Survive Your Next Holiday Party

Making heathy choices at your next Holiday Party is easier than you think...all you need are a few fresh ideas!

Do you find that by the end of December you have attended at least three or four different holiday parties? And why not? The Secret Santa exchanges, decorations and the rich delicious foodF are what jazz us up for the holiday season. By January, no wonder we’re all signing up for a gym membership! Thankfully, there are a few tips to adhere by when attending your next soiree that might keep your belt cinched up tight.

Speaking of belts...

Wear fitted clothing. It might sound a little silly, but skipping the elastic waistband for a sensible cinched waistline can help you avoid going overboard with your portion sizes. Who wants to be uncomfortable and bloated at a party?

Pre-game It. Before heading out for the night, have a light meal or some protein-rich snacks like string cheese, nuts or yogurt. You can avoid being completely famished and gorging yourself on greasy snacks at the party.

Be the last in line. Those potatoes au gratin don’t look as appetizing with the crispy cheese layer completely demolished, do they? The food will lose its luster if you are the last in line, keeping you from scooping extra. Also, don’t forget to find the smallest plate possible.

Switch to wine spritzers. If you are a holiday cocktail buff, you may get most of your calories in liquid form. A wine spritzer is something tasty you can sip on all night without the risk of too many extra pounds or unwanted dance moves. Just mix two ounces of wine with club soda, cranberry juice and some lime juice, and you have a refreshing beverage.

Chew something other than food. Chewing gum after your plate is clean will help you avoid picking at the food table.

Be an outstanding guest. Clear some plates and load the dishwasher for your host. Not only will they love you for it, but you can avoid sitting around and eating. And don’t let them thank you with a giant tupperware of leftovers!

Holiday parties are about the friends and fun, not the food. Keeping these tips in mind will make it easier to focus on the fun and not worry about overdoing it this year!
