The inextricable relationship between music and art is timeless. Del Ray Artisans, the <a href="https://alexsym.org/support/sola/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Symphony Orchestra League of Alexandria (SOLA)</a>, and the <a href="https://sonovamusic.org/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Symphony Orchestra of Northern Virginia (SONOVA)</a> present Pictures at an Alexandria Exhibition, an online art auction fundraising event and concert performance.
SONOVA will present a live performance of music selections that inspired the artwork at the <a href="https://calendar.nvcc.edu/schlesinger" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Arts Center</a> at Northern Virginia Community College*, Alexandria Campus, on Saturday, May 30 at 3pm.  <a href="https://sonovamusic.org/pictures-at-an-alexandria-exhibition/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Tickets are available on the SONOVA website</a>.  A digital slideshow of a selection of the auction artworks will be featured during the concert.
The exhibit artworks will be sold at an online auction between May 4–31, 2026. Proceeds benefit each artist, DRA, SONOVA, and SOLA.

Give some TLC to Del Ray Artisans’ gardens! Join the Gardens Committee to spruce up the landscaping around the gallery.
Bring gloves, knee pads (if desired), and laughter. Even if you don’t
 know what a weed is, we can teach you. Volunteer for 1 hour or the 
whole 2.5 hours. If you have any questions, please email Jenny at <a href="mailto:gardens@delrayartisans.org" target="_blank">Gardens@DelRayArtisans.org</a>.
MEMBERS: This task counts towards your annual membership volunteer hours (<a href="https://delrayartisans.org/volunteer/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">record your hours</a>).
NON-MEMBERS: You are welcome to come help and learn too.
Save the Dates: During the season (March-October), 
the committee meets once a month on a weekend day from 9am-11am. In July
 and August, we’ll meet an hour earlier (8am-10am) to avoid the heat. 
Our 2026 dates are:

Thank you for your volunteer time!
 
NOTE: All plantings&nbsp;and transplantings
 must be approved by the Garden Committee. The Garden Committee approval
 is important to make sure the plants that get chosen are great for 
nature, located properly for the right amount of sun or shade, don’t 
conflict with other plants or facility needs, and fit into the overall 
garden plan with maintenance in mind.

Welcome to Radical Sewing Club-ALX!
Started in LA by Scout Quiquivix, the Alexandria chapter is a monthly
 drop-in style meeting where you can learn clothing repair, hand and 
machine sewing, or bring your own project to work on with the community.
Radical Sewing Club is about more than sewing–it’s a space to 
reimagine craft outside of capitalism, to resist exploitation and 
oppression, and to stitch together a world based on care and solidarity.
 All who share these values are welcome.
Registration: Registration is not required, but you may <a href="https://radical-sewing-club-alx.eventbrite.com" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">set a reminder in Eventbrite</a>.
Cost: Recommended donation of $10 or pay what you 
can. No one turned away for lack of funds! Monetary donations will be 
split between Del Ray Artisans (our wonderful hosts) and Radical Sewing 
Club for continued materials.
Have materials to donate? We welcome fabric (full cuts and scraps 
alike), thread, needles, interfacing, embroidery hoops, buttons, pins, 
trims, lace, and functional zippers.

National Museum of the American Indian

Join Hālau Hoʻomau I ka Wai Ola O Hawaiʻi&nbsp;to commemorate the arrival of a sacred Hawaiian artifact at the National Museum of the American Indian Smithsonian as part of Hoʻolauleʻa: Welcoming Kānepō Ka Lua on Saturday, May 16, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Alexandria, Vir.-based Hawaiian cultural school will perform on at 12 noon, 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. on May 16.
Led by Kumu Hula Manu Ikaika, the musicians and dancers of Hālau Hoʻomau I ka Wai Ola O Hawaiʻi will demonstrate a variety of Hawaiian instruments and implements including the ulili (Hawaiian gourd yoyo), handmade by the dancers. Other implements demonstrated in the performance will include the pahu (large standing drum used for chant and hula accompaniment), the ipu and ipu heke (hollowed gourds used as handheld drums), ‘ohe hano ihu (bamboo nose flutes), ‘uli’uli (feathered gourd rattles), ‘ili’ili
(hand-held river rocks), pū’ili (slit-ended bamboo sticks), kālā’au
(tapping sticks), ukulele and more!

Live From Your Studio is a free, members-only, virtual 
gathering where Del Ray Artisans members can connect from their 
art-making space. This virtual event will take place monthly on
 the third Sunday of the month (excluding December) over Zoom. Artists 
are encouraged (but not required) to join from their studios and make 
art during the session. These events will allow members to paint and 
create art together, and forge deeper connections to other members.
RSVP at least a week before the gathering to help organizers prepare.
 Zoom connection information will be emailed to you two days before the 
gathering. If you have any questions, please contact organizer Laura

Ima Hogg (1882-1975), daughter of James Stephen Hogg, the first native-born governor of Texas, lived for a time in the Texas governor’s mansion in Austin. The experience helped shape her appreciation for both antique furniture and history. In the early 1920s, she began to collect American antiques, including glass, ceramics, and furniture. Later in the decade, she embarked on the construction of Bayou Bend in Houston, which would be her home until the 1960s. As her collection grew, Miss Hogg resolved that she would establish a museum, seeking to bring early American art and history to Texas. She made gifts of her home and collection to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Bayou Bend opened to the public in 1966. Miss Hogg’s remarkable foresight, determination, and humility created an institution that has grown and flourished, and that continues to interpret an expanding narrative of American art and history via its collections and programs. This presentation will explore the development of the Bayou Bend Collection under Miss Hogg’s guidance and will also discuss more recent additions.
Bradley Brooks is a specialist in historic house museums with a background in American decorative arts. He came to Bayou Bend in 2015 from the Indianapolis Museum of Art, where he served as founding curator for two historic house museums, Oldfields, the J. K. Lilly, Jr. residence, and Eero Saarinen’s Miller House. He also served as assistant curator of American decorative arts. Previously, he was director of the McFaddin-Ward House in Beaumont, Texas; and founding curator, then director, of the Moody Mansion in Galveston. He earned a B.A. in communication arts from Elizabethtown College, and an M.A. in early American culture from the Winterthur Program of the University of Delaware.
