Discover Alexandria's African American Legends: "Beacons of Light" Book Signing @ Special Collections Library

African Americans who contributed to Alexandria's rich past, will now shine brighter thanks to local authors who chronicle their struggles and victories in the new book, African Americans of Alexandria Virginia: Beacons of Light in the Twentieth Century. Alexandria Library’s Special Collections Branch has invited the writers on Saturday, August 3 at noon to discuss their groundbreaking work that recognizes the black legends. In their book, Char McCargo Bah, Christa Watters, Audrey P. Davis, Gwendolyn Brown-Henderson and James E. Henson, Sr. highlight trailblazers such as attorney Samuel Tucker--who led one of the country's first Civil Rights sit-ins in 1939 at Alexandria Library--and one of the nation's first black fighter pilots, Tuskegee Airman Rutherford Adkins. Join us for an enlightening talk about historical figures who paved the way for generations to come. Books will be available for purchase and signing. The Special Collections Branch is located at 717 Queen St. in Alexandria, Va.
