Photos: Little League Plays At Alexandria Baseball Field After Shooting

Alexandria's Simpson Field reopened after the Congressional shooting for Little League games Tuesday night.

(Updated 11:03 p.m. Tuesday) ALEXANDRIA, VA — Less than a week ago, Eugene Simpson Stadium Park became part of a crime scene when a shooter opened fire on a GOP Congressional baseball practice. House Majority Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana and five others were injured in the June 14 shooting.

Now the field has returned to its original purpose: baseball.

Alexandria commemorated the field's reopening Tuesday at 6 p.m. Elected officials, Alexandria police officers and fire officials threw ceremonial first pitches. The park, surrounding areas and the YMCA reopened over the weekend after the the FBI and law enforcement collected evidence.

The game drew a number of Alexandria's first responders.

“This game will happen, and we are embracing our children of the city,” said Mayor Allison Silberberg at a Monday press conference.

Alexandria Sheriff Dana Lawhorne, a Del Ray resident, noted that he and others have grown up playing in that park.

"We've got to move on in a sense that it means so much to us...to all of us that live there," he said.

Anyone playing on a city athletic team were invited on the field for a group photo. Players were encouraged to wear their jerseys.

Two games were scheduled for Tuesday night: the junior division Harris Teeter team played Fort Hunt Little League on the big field and the ages 9-10-11 All-Star team played Mason District All-Stars on the little field.

Simpson Park is located at 426 Monroe Ave.
