Love=Love

Today, in case you are literally living under a rock with no Wi-Fi access, the Supreme Court has ruled that married gay couples are eligible for federal benefits as well as defending marriage between same sex couples. This is a historic day and great victory for civil rights in the United States. Naturally, I begin to think about family, well families, actually. Families, as I often see in my Facebook feed (and in real life), are as diverse as the people in this country. Married, heterosexual couples, single parents, stepparents, couples of different nationalities and ethnicities, those who parent without getting married, adoptive families, family members raising children, same sex couples; are all parts of the ever-evolving family. Why wouldn’t we look upon the families comprised of two dads or two moms with the same respect we have for family? It is, at the core, about love, being a supportive partner and parent, a healthy individual. Frankly, all I care about is that you take good care of your children! I reflect on the impact of the Supreme Court ruling on American children and the communities in which they live. I imagine the child at school who is describing their “nontraditional” family to curious classmates. My hope is that children will be able to answer with their heads up, “I have two dads that love me” or “My parents are divorced.” With that in mind, I am filled with hope and joy today.
