Mount Vernon Community School Raising Funds for Playground

The group kicked off a Playground Improvement campaign on #GivingTuesday (Dec. 2).

The PTA at the Mount Vernon Community School is working hard to renovate the playground at the school that is the center of life for so many families in Del Ray. The playground is located at Uhler Street and Mt. Vernon Avenue.

The group kicked off a Playground Improvement campaign on #GivingTuesday (Dec. 2) and hoped to raise $2,000 in 24 hours. You can donate a gift here.

Kindergarten to 3rd grade students use the playground during the school year, and in the afternoons and weekends, countless families in the community hang out there, even those without kids at the school.

But aside from the bright blue play equipment, the rest of the play area leaves much to be desired. On rainy days, the small field is a mud pit surrounded by trees with exposed roots, the picnic table area is frequently flooded and the unappealing chain link fence is often times littered with trash and weeds, an online description notes on a Web site set up to bring attention to renovation of theplayground.

Organizers have been working tirelessly with the city and the school system to start laying the groundwork for the much needed renovations.
