New Voting Precinct Proposed in Alexandria

If approved, Alexandria's new voting precinct at Potomac Yard would go into effect for this year's general election.

ALEXANDRIA, VA -- The Alexandria Electoral Board is considering the creation of a new voting precinct at Potomac Yard that would go into effect for the Nov. 7 general election.

The new precinct would be created from parts of the three existing precincts in the Del Ray area. These precincts and their polling place locations are Cora Kelly Center (25 W. Reed Ave.), Mount Vernon Center (2701 Commonwealth Ave.), and George Washington Middle School (1005 Mount Vernon Ave).

The board will hold a public meeting on May 18, from 7 p.m. - 8 p.m, to receive comments. The meeting will be held at the proposed polling location, the community meeting room at the Station at Potomac Yard (650 Maskell St). Those unable to attend the meeting can submit written comments to the Office of Voter Registration and Elections, Attn: Anna Leider, Registrar of Voters, 132 North Royal St., Suite 100, Alexandria, VA 22314, or by email to anna.leider@alexandriava.gov.

The board will make a recommendation to the City Council on June 13. The council could choose to move forward with a public hearing and vote on June 24.

The change would result in less voters in each precinct. The city anticipates the change will reduce wait times for voting. According to Virginia law, changes to precincts can be made until 60 days before an election.

If the proposal is approved, affected voters will be notified by mail in July and again before the general election. For more information, visit the city's website.
