No New Coronavirus Deaths, Northern Region Leads VA In New Cases
The eastern region's new case average has been declining since reaching a late July peak.
VIRGINIA — The Virginia Department of Health reported 937 additional coronavirus cases on Sunday, bringing the cumulative total to 106,687. A total of 2,381 Virginians with coronavirus have died with no new deaths being reported on Sunday. There have been 8,737 coronavirus hospitalizations to date.
The northern region leads Virginia's regions with 287 new cases, followed by 260 in the eastern region, 150 in the southwest region, 123 in the central region, and 117 in the northwest region. The eastern region's average new cases have fallen since reaching a peak 7-day average of 483.3 cases on July 25. The region's latest average is 279.9 cases. By comparison, the northern region's 7-day average is 233.9 cases.
Virginia's 7-day average of positive coronavirus tests is 7.2 percent as of Aug. 12. By region, positive averages include 9.3 percent in the eastern region, 7.5 percent in the central region, 7.1 percent in the southwest region, 6.3 percent in the northern region, and 5.5 percent in the northwest region. Statewide, there have been 1,349,460 PCR tests completed in Virginia as of Sunday, up 16,522 from Saturday.

Current hospitalizations of COVID-19 patients dropped by nearly 100 between Saturday and Sunday. There are 1,184 current patients, down from 1,271 on Saturday. These patients include 165 on ventilators and 283 in the intensive care units, according to the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association. There have also been 13,783 total COVID-19 patients discharged from hospitals.
Ventilator use among all hospital patients remains steady at 20 percent, and ICU occupancy dropped from 79 percent to 70 percent between Saturday and Sunday. The 2019 average ICU occupancy in Virginia was 67 percent. There is one hospital reporting difficulty obtaining personal protective equipment within 72 hours and one hospital reporting difficulty obtaining other medical supplies within 72 hours.

As of Friday, Virginia Department of Health contact tracing data shows health officials reached an average of 86.8 percent of positive cases within 24 hours. There are 10,510 contacts of positive cases under public health monitoring. Health officials have been unable to reach 17.2 percent of contacts to date.

- Alexandria: 3,104 cases, 284 hospitalizations, 61 deaths; increase of 22 cases and one hospitalization
- Arlington County: 3,229 cases, 437 hospitalizations, 135 deaths; increase of 33 cases
- Fairfax County: 16,995 cases, 1,968 hospitalizations, 533 deaths; increase of 113 cases and one hospitalization
- Fairfax City: 103 cases, 11 hospitalizations, seven deaths; increase of five cases
- Falls Church: 62 cases, nine hospitalizations, six deaths; no change
- Loudoun County: 5,511 cases, 360 hospitalizations, 115 hospitalizations; increase of 29 cases
- Manassas: 1,710 cases, 125 hospitalizations, 22 deaths; increase of 14 cases and one hospitalization
- Manassas Park: 535 cases, 50 hospitalizations, seven deaths; increase of five cases
- Prince William County: 9,890 cases, 815 hospitalizations, 178 deaths; increase of 66 cases and one hospitalization
- Fredericksburg: 428 cases, 45 hospitalizations, four deaths; increase of two cases
- Spotsylvania County: 1,607 cases, 103 hospitalizations, 35 deaths; increase of nine cases
- Stafford County: 1,496 cases, 125 hospitalizations, 10 deaths; increase of 16 cases and one hospitalization
