Alexandria Residents Lose Power Amid Bitter Cold

Thousands in Alexandria were without power early Friday morning as strong winds and bitter cold continue.

ALEXANDRIA, VA—As fierce winds continued through the night, thousands of Alexandria residents were without power early Friday morning. As of 10:30 a.m. Dominion Energy had indicated all power had been restored.

Residents reported losing power on social media from Old Town to West End. According to the Dominion Energy power outage map, the bulk of the outages were around the Del Ray, North Ridge, Rosemont and Taylor Run areas.

The power outage had temporarily closed Chinquapin Park Recreation Center, the city reported early Friday morning. As of 9:10 a.m., the recreation center was open after power had been completely restored.

Aside from Francis C. Hammond closing due to heating issues, no public schools have closed. Alexandria City Public Schools ran on a two-hour delay Friday after school was closed Thursday.

Alexandria and other parts of Northern Virginia are under a wind chill advisory until noon Friday from the National Weather Service. Forecasters say cold temperatures and strong winds create dangerous conditions outside. The cold wind chills can cause frostbite to exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.
