Brooke Sydnor Curran is a Alexandria, VA mom,
who 15 years ago, ran 10 miles per week just to get out of the house. When 9/11
happened, she realized the precariousness of life and decided to start her
‘bucket list’. Running a marathon seemed like a logical start.
On October 20, she was in the Des Moines, Iowa, running her 65th marathon and crossed the finish line at approximately
11:40 AM (Central Time). This was the capstone of 4 years of effort: running a
marathon on all 7 continents (including Antarctica), in each of the 50 states,
the 5 world marathon majors (Boston, Berlin, London, New York and Chicago), and
DC too (just because).
She's run 36,000 training miles, 1,703 marathon miles -- running over a-marathon-a-month since May, 2009 -- AND paying all her own travel expenses and fees, to inspire others to give back to local charity. All proceeds benefit
at-risk children in the areas of early childhood education and health/fitness.
The RunningBrooke fund (a 501(c)(3) charity through ACT for Alexandria) has
raised and donated over $300,000.00 since 2009. So far they have made grants to
17 Alexandria-based charities, helping thousands of at-risk kids lead better
lives.
Phase 1: A marathon on each of the 7 continents, in each of the 50 states, the
5 world marathon majors -- a marathon a month and donating all proceeds --
Done!
Phase 2: 100 marathons (for Brooke) and one million dollars for at-risk NoVA
kids.
