Sunday Traffic Alert: Road Closures for GW Parkway Classic

Sunday's GW Parkway Classic will result in road closures in Alexandria and along the George Washington Parkway.

ALEXANDRIA, VA -- The annual GW Parkway Classic will cause road closures in Alexandria and along the George Washington Memorial Parkway to Mount Vernon, Alexandria Police said.

Most of the closures will occur Sunday morning, but Pendleton Street between Fairfax and Union Streets will close from noon Saturday to noon Sunday.

  • The George Washington Parkway will be closed to traffic from the Alexandria city line to Mount Vernon 6 a.m.-11 a.m.
  • Union Street will be closed 7 a.m.-11 a.m.
  • Franklin Street from Washington to Union Streets will be closed 7 a.m.-11 a.m.
  • Traffic on South Washington Street between Gibbon and South Alfred Streets will be have one lane open in each direction 6 a.m.-11 a.m. Only local traffic will be allowed in this stretch. Residents of Port Vecchio Condominiums and Hunting Point on the Potomac will be able to use Washington Street to enter and exit at certain points of the race.
  • On I-495, the Church Street ramp (exit 177c) will be closed 6 a.m.-11 a.m.

The GW Parkway Classic begins at 8 a.m. and runs from George Washington's Mount Vernon estate to Old Town Alexandria. View more information about the annual race online.
