On-Time Graduation Data Released: How Alexandria Did

Reports from the Virginia Department of Education show the high school's on-time graduation rates compared to the state.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — T.C. Williams High School faces challenges with on-time graduation rates despite a few bright spots, according to data released by the Virginia Department of Education Tuesday.

The school's on-time graduation rate for the 2018-2019 school year was 83.5 percent, an improvement from 80.6 percent the year before. By comparison, Virginia overall had 91.5 percent.

The school faces disparities among certain subgroups of students. Economically disadvantaged students had an 79.4 percent on-time graduation rate, compared to 87.2 percent for the state. The 68.5 percent of English language learners graduating on time was slightly lower than the state's 71.1 percent. On the other hand, students with disabilities had a 96.1 percent on-time graduation rate, well above the state's 88.5 percent average.

Among black students, 88.7 percent graduated on time, a percentage similar to the state's. The 97.3 percent of white students who graduated on time was higher than the state's 94.7 percent average. Asian students had an 84.3 percent on-time graduation rate compared to the state's 97.5 percent, and Hispanic students had a 70.6 percent rate compared to the state's 80.1 percent average.

T.C. Williams High School had 902 students enrolled in 12th grade during the last school year. The student population is 40.5 percent Hispanic, 28.5 percent black, 24.1 percent white, 4.5 percent Asian, 1.9 percent with mixed races, 0.3 percent American Indian and 0.2 percent native Hawaiian. At T.C. Williams, 63 percent of students are economically disadvantaged, 31.2 percent are English language learners and 10.8 percent have disabilities.

The T.C. Williams High School class of 2019 had 34.3 percent with advanced diplomas, 49.2 percent with standard or other diplomas, 8.8 percent with GEDs or certificates and other non-graduates, and 7.7 percent of students who dropped out.
