Two More Historic Ships Found In Alexandria
The ships are likely from the same time period as the one discovered in 2015.

Archaeologists have uncovered remains of two historic ships at a construction site in Alexandria, the city announced Monday. The ships are likely from the 1700s or early 1800s, the same time period as the ship found at the Hotel Indigo construction site in 2015.
The remains were found at the Robinson Terminal South, right across from the Hotel Indigo site where archaeologists discovered a historic warehouse and ship. The city is analyzing the next steps on what to do with the ship remains. The historic artifacts cannot be viewed by the public at this time, as they are on a private construction site.
"The discovery of three historic ships in a two-block area is absolutely incredible," said Eleanor Breen, the acting city archaeologist. "There have been very few ships from this era excavated in Virginia or nationwide."

The potential for discovering more historic artifacts grows along as development continues along Alexandria's waterfront. Archaeologists have been on site as required by city law to monitor for historic features. These discoveries provide additional insight into wharves and piers, maritime vessels, early industries, and commercial and domestic activities.
Alexandria was founded in 1749, 27 years before the United States became an independent nation.
