VeloCity Bicycle Co-op Hosting First Women's Night
Event will feature open shop at Mt. Vernon Avenue facility followed by a community bike ride.

Velocity Bicycle Cooperative is hosting its first ever women’s night on Monday.
Beginning at 5 p.m., women are invited for open shop hours at the co-op’s at 2111 Mt. Vernon Avenue. The assembled group will then go on a neighborhood bike ride through Del Ray at 6 p.m.
“We just noticed that the ladies were out-numbered at VeloCity and wanted to think of a way to help bring women in and also make the women who come feel more comfortable,” VeloCity’s Lori Kartchner wrote in an email to Patch.

Kartchner said she thinks the evening will be a good opportunity to dust off those bicycles that have been put away for the winter and get them working again.
“I think it [will] give people a chance to ask those questions they might otherwise feel dumb asking (think the basics of basics, like how to put air in the tires or adjust your seat),” Kartchner wrote. “No one wants a little thing to get in the way of putting you on the road and enjoying your ride. The mission of the whole cooperative is empowerment through knowledge and we want to make sure the ladies are included.”

VeloCity’s Amanda Solliday and Sonja Graves will oversee what the cooperative hopes is the first of many women’s nights at the facility.
