Weather Call Made For Third Straight Day At Alexandria Schools

Virtual learning will continue for Alexandria students amid impacts from Monday's winter storm.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Alexandria City Public Schools will continue to hold virtual learning for a third day as impacts from Monday's winter storm linger.

ACPS school buildings and offices will close due to continued winter weather conditions in the DC region. The school district made the decision amid concerns about "staff's ability to safely travel to work from across the region." Students were originally scheduled to return from winter break on Jan. 3.

Per the ACPS policy for inclement weather, virtual learning will provide continuity of learning despite the school building closures. Virtual learning features teacher-led office hours and asynchronous learning without live instruction. Attendance will be tracked as students log in to Canvas and Clever. No new content will be taught, and grades will not be assigned on virtual learning days. Students are expected to bring home computers or devices and other materials each school day in case schools close for inclement weather.

Weather impacts continue from Monday's winter storm, including hazardous roads and scattered power outages. Some areas of Alexandria received over 10 inches of snow, according to preliminary totals from the National Weather Service. The National Weather Service says there is potential for hazardous conditions Wednesday morning with a 30 to 50 percent chance of light freezing rain. If freezing rain does occur, forecasters expect dangerous travel conditions, crashes and delays.
