FAIRFAX, VA — U.S. Rep. James Walkinshaw (D), who represents Virginia's 11th Congressional District in Congress, will be the Democratic Party's candidate in the Nov. 3 general election.
"I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue fighting for Virginians in Washington," the incumbent congressman said Tuesday night in a post on X. "Now, we turn our focus to November: electing Democrats and flipping the House."
Walkinshaw was first elected to Congress on Sept. 9, 2025, defeating Republican opponent Stewart Whitson in the race to fill the seat the became vacant with the death of U.S. Rep. Gerry Connolly the previous May.
Candidates interested in being on their party's ballot in the Aug. 4 primary had to file paperwork by 5 p.m. on Tuesday. Walkinshaw was the only Democrat to file by the deadline.
In January, former U.S. Space Force Col. Bree Fram declared her candidacy for the 11th District Congressional seat. However, she ended her campaign earlier this month.
Nathan Headrick is the only Republican who filed paperwork to run in the 11th District race by Tuesday's deadline, according to Ballotopia.
Candidates not affiliated with a party who wish to be on the Nov. 3 ballot have until 7 p.m. on Aug. 4 to file paperwork with the Virginia Department of Elections.
