BAILEY'S CROSSROADS, VA — Three residents were displaced and three pets were found dead in a Bailey's Crossroads townhouse fire Wednesday.

Fairfax County, Arlington County and Alexandria firefighters responded to the 3300 block of Spring Lane around 5:24 p.m. to find smoke showing from a two-store end unit home. Crews located and extinguished the fire in the basement.

One resident was home at the time and found the fire in the basement before evacuating. During the fire department response, three cats were found dead as a result of the fire. No residents or firefighters were injured.

Investigators say the fire started in the basement kitchen due to an electrical event on the stove's electronic control area. The house had working smoke alarms, which activated after the fire was found. The fire department estimated damages were $93,750.

The displaced residents declined Red Cross assistance.
