5 Fun Things To Do This Month In Falls Church

From a medieval-themed mead tasting to Disney Princess face painting, there's a variety of events going on around Falls Church in August.

FALLS CHURCH, VA—Summer's going by fast, and there's just a month left to enjoy the season. There are plenty of events going on in and around Falls Church to soak up the remainder of the summer.

There's a mix of free and paid events. Whether you're looking for a happy hour or fun for the whole family, there's a variety of events going on.

1. Princess Face Painting At the Locker Room, Tuesdays through Aug. 29, 5-7 p.m.

Come out every Tuesday for face painting with the Vienna Singing Princesses at the Locker Room. The group of Vienna students provides performances, as well as babysitting and tutoring in the local area. Each week, kids will have the opportunity to meet two new princesses (or princes). The event is free, and kids eat free at the Locker Room with an adult entree purchase.

2. Men in Tights Renaissance Faire - Saturday, August 5 11 a.m.

Step into medieval times for drinks at the Black Squirrel in Dunn Loring. In honor of International Mead Day, the new restaurant is serving up local meads and medieval dishes. You can also try your hand at cornhole or an Elizabethan era drinking game, or get your face painted. Anyone who dresses in medieval clothing gets 10 percent off their bill.

Meaderies will be on hand to sample meads and find out how the European tradition is making a comeback. Participating meaderies include:

  • Charm City Meadery (Baltimore, Md)
  • Crafted Artisan Meadery (Mogadore, Ohio)
  • Redstone Meadery (Boulder, Color.)
  • B. Nektar Meadery (Ferndale, Mich.)

Andrew Geffken, owner Charm City Meadery will be launching the mead in Virginia. He will be there to talk mead making and distribute samples of Charm City’s Wildflower Mead.

3. Movies at the Mosaic District, Fridays through Aug. 25 and Sundays through Aug. 27

The outdoor shopping mall is screening documentaries on Friday nights and family movies Sundays. The remaining schedules are:

Fridays

  • Aug. 4: Les Paul: Live in New York City (2005)
  • Aug. 11: Chicago in Chicago (2012)
  • Aug. 18: Michael Jackson’s This is It (2009)
  • Aug. 25: Down From the Mountain (2001)

Sundays

  • Aug. 6: Tangled
  • Aug. 13: Snow White
  • Aug. 20: Mary Poppins
  • Aug. 27: The Lego Batman Movie

4. Solar Eclipse Peak, Aug. 21, 1- 3 p.m.

For the first time in 99 years, a total solar eclipse will be visible across the U.S. It is expected to happen Monday, Aug. 21 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Falls Church will see around 81 percent of the sun covered during the event. Mary Riley Styles Library (120 N Virginia Ave, Falls Church) will have glasses available to city residents for viewing the eclipse. They are available at the Youth Services Desk through Sunday, August 6. Quantities are limited and residents must show ID to receive the glasses. 5. Performances at The State Theatre, throughout August

There's a fantastic lineup of performers for all musical tastes at The State Theatre. Here are the performances lined up for August:
