Fairfax County Public Schools is proposing re-assigning Timber Lane students north of Rt. 29:
➡️ FROM Longfellow Middle School / McLean High School (VA Ranked #4/ Nationally Ranked #218)
➡️ TO Luther Jackson Middle School / Falls Church High School (VA Ranked #110/ Nationally Ranked #5,630)
This change upends a 40-year-old existing school pyramid. It will significantly diminish property values – by 20% or more; lower home sale prices; lessen demand; and diminish students’ educational opportunities and experiences by removing them from nationally top-performing schools.

Diminished Educational Opportunities and Access to Programming: Students would lose access to McLean's nationally ranked academics, clubs, and sports - programs and opportunities built on decades of community investment. This change is not providing a similar educational opportunity (easily available by proposing Marshall HS on Rte. 7 instead).
Enrollment/Capacity: Both Falls Church HS and Luther Jackson MS would be pushed over capacity, straining facilities and learning conditions. It does not remedy or even alleviate overcrowding. Meanwhile, Kilmer and Longfellow MS and Marshall HS will be far under capacity and are all better options for our children.
Proximity: This creates an attendance island rather than eliminating one (and FCPS’s proposed changes retain attendance islands throughout the county). Walkers, bikers, and new drivers – anyone traveling to these schools –must cross two dangerous highways (29 & 50) to get to school. This also separates students from lifelong friends, neighbors and teammates.
Transportation: No significant distance or travel time is saved with these moves. Luther Jackson MS is not closer in distance than Longfellow MS. Travel time to McLean HS is the same or shorter than to Falls Church HS. Kilmer MS and Marshall HS are also equally close by all measures. Elementary AAP students would now have to travel six miles every day to attend school (Mantua ES), instead of the current two miles (Haycock ES); this is a huge burden on bus routes, students, and families - esp. on dark winter mornings and evenings.
