2 Residents, Dog Die In House Fire In Sleepy Hollow Area

A child and adult are dead after an early Tuesday house fire, and the fire's cause is still under investigation.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — A child, adult and dog died in a house fire early Tuesday in the Sleepy Hollow area of Fairfax County, according to the fire department.

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue responded to the 6600 block of Barrett Road around 1:44 a.m. Tuesday. The fire department found heavy fire in the back of the home and removed two people and a dog from the home. One was a minor who died at the hospital. The other was in critical condition and later died at the hospital. The adult was identified as Patricia Stoderl, 67, of Falls Church. The dog also did not survive. There were no firefighter injuries.

The cause of death for the two residents is pending an autopsy and toxicology report from the medical examiner. These were Fairfax County's second and third fire fatalities in 2022.

Investigators determined the fire started on the exterior of the home, but the cause of the fire is still being investigated.

Two adults who were not home during the home were displaced and being assisted by Red Cross. The fire department estimated damages to be approximately $198,456.
