Falls Church Considers Capital Bikeshare Locations

Falls Church has released plans for desired Capital Bikeshare locations and estimated costs. Residents can provide input in July.

FALLS CHURCH, VA—The City of Falls Church is moving forward with its plan to join Capital Bikeshare, a rental system around the DC Metro area.

Capital Bikeshare has 440 bike-share stations and over 4,000 bicycles in DC, Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax County and Montgomery County, Md. Currently the closest station to the city is at East Falls Church Metro in Arlington.

The city plans to join the system to expand transportation options for residents and visitors, as well as encourage alternatives to single-occupancy cars. Ideally, the city wants 10 to 16 stations. These stations would be a quarter mile to half mile apart at city attractions and transportation points.

Annual costs are estimated at $13,049 per station, and they could be be funded by the Capital Bikeshare user fees, potential sponsorships and advertising, as well as grants.

Residents can find out more about the city's plan to join Capital Bikeshare at Farmers Markets information booths on July 1 and July 8. The city will hear resident input at a community meeting on July 20 from 7-9 p.m. at City Hall.

The City Council was given an update in May will discuss the measure again on August 14.
