City, School Board Issue Request for Conceptual Proposals

City looking to replace or renovate George Mason High and expand Mary Ellen Henderson Middle School.

The City of Falls Church and the Falls Church City Public School Board have issued a Request for Conceptual Proposals (RFP) under the Virginia Public-Private Education Facilities and Infrastructure Act of 2002 for the:

  • Replacement or renovation of existing George Mason High School;
  • Expansion of the existing Mary Ellen Henderson Middle School; and
  • Redevelopment and commercialization of land adjacent to the existing schools to generate revenue for the School Board and the City to help fund the capital costs of the new and expanded school facilities.

The 34.6 acre site is located in the City of Falls Church bounded by Leesburg Pike, Haycock Road, and Falls Church Drive (an unsigned Metro access road). This site is adjacent to I-66 and near the West Falls Church metro station.

Under the terms of the RFP, up to 10.38 acres of the site can be used for development other than for school purposes. Reconfiguring of current school campus and facilities would provide multiple academic and commercial options.

Conceptual proposals are due Oct. 30, 2015. Additional information and the full RFP can be found on the City’s website, www.fallschurchva.gov/CampusRedevelopment.
