“In 2013, the Region donated nearly 14 tons of blankets and coats to Syrian refugees who fled to Turkey as the result of violence in their home country. The need today is just as great,” said NVRC Executive Director Robert Lazaro.

Falls Church residents have other ways to help out Ukrainians locally.

Local Bakers Bake for Ukraine, an effort by bakers in Northern Virginia, has raised $6,300 to support Ukraine. The main recipients of the fundraiser are World Central Kitchen, Save the Children and United Help Ukraine.

The Kindness of Strangers, a nonprofit group started in 2021 by a group of Arlington teenagers, is collecting medical supplies that will be flown to Poland and Ukraine. The group also has provided a link to items most needed that will be sent to Ukraine Express in Delaware and then flown to Ukraine and Poland.
