Driver In Stolen Vehicle Dies In Capital Beltway Express Lanes Crash: Police

State police say the driver was going the wrong way in the I-495 Express Lanes when the vehicle crashed and caught fire.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — A driver in a stolen car was killed in a Capital Beltway Express Lanes crash in Fairfax County early Friday, according to Virginia State Police.

The crash happened in the northbound I-495 Express Lanes at Exit 49 for I-66. According to police, the vehicle was traveling the wrong way at a high rate of speed when it struck a cement jersey wall head-on. The crash impact caused the black 2018 Maserati Quattroporte sedan to catch fire.

The driver was killed in the crash. The body was taken to the medical examiner for an autopsy and identification. There were no other occupants in the vehicle and no other vehicles involved in the crash.

Police say the Maserati had been reported stolen in Prince George's County, Maryland. The crash continues to be investigated.
