Falls Church Recycling Extravaganza Returns On Saturday

Saturday is the city's largest recycling event of the year. Here's what you can bring.

UPDATE: Electronics recycling is not available at the event, the city announced Saturday.

FALLS CHURCH, VA — The City of Falls Church will hold its annual Recycling Extravaganza on Saturday, allowing city residents to drop off materials not allowed in curbside collections. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Recycling Center, 217 Gordon Road.

Residents can drop off select materials such as Hazardous Household Waste and specified items for donation. ID or proof of City of Falls Church residency is required to drop off items.

Items being accepted include:

  • Hazardous Household Waste like household cleaners, automotive fluids, herbicides, pesticides, oil-based or latex paints, fluorescent bulbs, and petroleum based products.
  • Shredded paper, up to three boxes.

Usable items that can be donated at the event include wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, bicycles, clothing, clothing accessories, clean scrap cloth, textiles like bed and bath linens, and metal items like pots, pans, tools and small kitchen appliances. Large kitchen appliances and other medical items such as medicine, drugs and syringes are not accepted at the event.

Residents will be asked to stay in their vehicles and allow event staff to remove items and materials.

There are alternatives for recycling if you can't make the event. Clothing and textiles as well as accepted metal items (pots, pans, tools, pipes, Venetian blinds, small metal appliances and other miscellaneous metal items) may also be dropped off during Recycling Center hours any day. Fairfax County typically holds shredding events that are free to City of Falls Church residents, but those are postponed until further notice. Bikenetic at 201 West Jefferson Street accepts bicycles during store hours. To donate canes, crutches, wheelchairs, walkers, and strollers, contact the Virginia Medical Brigade.

Select electronics are accepted at eAsset Solutions at 427 North Maple Avenue from Monday to Saturday between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. It is free for city residents, but proof of residency is required. For Hazardous Household Waste, Fairfax County's HHW Drop-off Station at 4618 West Ox Road in Fairfax is free for city residents. Check the county's website for the latest hours.
