The School Board plans to choose the next superintendent after a four-month search for candidates.

FALLS CHURCH, VA — The city's school system has nearly completed its search for a new superintendent, and the winning candidate will be announced by April 10, the beginning of spring break, according to the chairman of the Falls Church School Board.

The new superintendent will oversee the Falls Church City Public Schools, a small system with about 2,400 students and five schools, including George Mason High School.

In a letter to the community released last week, School Board Chairman Lawrence Webb said the board has assessed superintendent candidates from "a pool of 38 highly-qualified candidates representing a wide range of geographic, ethnic and gender diversity."

The candidates were rounded up by a consulting firm that the city hired last fall. The firm conducted a month-long survey of Falls Church parents, school staff and residents "to help prioritize the criteria for our selection," Webb said in the letter.

The School Board has interviewed several of the top candidates, and the finalists will meet with a 13-member stakeholder panel that the board approved on March 7, Webb said. The board will make its final decision "after considering all of the information gathered over these last four months," he added.
