Earlier Monday, the National Weather Service canceled a flash flood watch that it had issued for most of Northern Virginia.

Looking ahead, by early Wednesday morning, showers may develop as the remnants of Tropical Storm Fred approach the D.C. area, especially in the western areas.

"The remnants of Tropical Storm Fred probably pass to our west on Wednesday and Thursday, where the bulk of the rain might stay. However, they will draw enough tropical moisture northward for scattered showers and storms both days that could produce locally heavy downpours," the Capital Weather Gang reported Monday.

Tropical Storm Fred came ashore the Florida Panhandle Monday afternoon. Before the storm heads north early Tuesday, rainfall totals near the Florida Panhandle coast could reach eight inches, with some places 12 inches of rain, according to the Capital Weather Gang.
