Hit-And-Run Crash In Bailey's Crossroads Leads To Charges

Fairfax County Police have arrested a driver who claimed to be a passenger in a May fatal hit-and-run crash.

BAILEY'S CROSSROADS, VA — A driver wanted in a May hit-and-run crash that killed a passenger in Bailey's Crossroads has been arrested by Fairfax County Police.

The crash happened around 2:16 a.m. on May 24 in the 3700 block of S. George Mason Drive. According to police, a 2018 Honda Accord heading north on S. George Mason Drive struck a 2016 Volkswagen Jetta heading south on S. George Mason Drive. The Jetta was attempting to turn left into Skyline Plaza when the Accord struck it on the passenger side.

The passenger in the Jetta, Gladis Suyapa Deras, 54, of Falls Church, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, a man, was taken to the hospital with non-life

Two occupants of the Accord fled from the scene but were found by a K-9 unit. One man was charged with drunk in public, and the other was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police did not initially know which occupant was the driver, as the real driver claimed he was the passenger. Detectives later determined the driver was Tewodros Worku, 35, of Maryland. Warrants were obtained for charges of DUI manslaughter and felony hit and run on Nov. 23.

Worku was arrested Monday by police with assistance from the Prince George’s County Sheriff’s Office. Worku will be extradited to Fairfax County for warrants to be served and a trial date to be set.
