Maryland Man Killed In Hang Glider Crash In Virginia: Police

Virginia State Police said a Maryland man was killed when his hang glider hit a tree and crashed in an area near Woodstock.

SHENANDOAH COUNTY, VA —A Maryland man was killed when his hang glider hit a tree and crashed near Woodstock in Shenandoah County Thursday afternoon, according to the Virginia State Police.

The pilot and sole occupant of the hang glider, Ward F. Odenwald, 71, of Woodbine, Maryland, died at the scene of the crash, police said.

The crash occurred shortly after 3 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of Woodstock Tower Road and Burnshire Lane in Shenandoah County.

According to the preliminary investigation, Odenwald lost control of the hang glider and collided with a tree before the hang glider crashed into the ground, police said.

Odenwald’s body was taken to the medical examiner's office in Manassas for an autopsy and examination.

The Federal Aviation Administration was notified of the crash, police said.
