Memorial Day: What's Open And Closed In Falls Church

Here's a breakdown of what is open and closed on Memorial Day and during the parade.

FALLS CHURCH, VA -- Falls Church City offices government offices will be closed for Memorial Day, Monday, May 29, as well as the library and schools. But public transit and state liquor stores will operate, although on a different schedule.

The city has a full day of events planned for the holiday that kicks off summer. The annual Memorial Day Parade begins at 2 p.m. Monday and will attract thousands of visitors to the city. Preceding the parade are musical performances, a veterans ceremony, activities at Cherry Hill Farmhouse and the Don Beyer Volvo Fun Run.

There will be road closures and limited parking options for the parade. The Kaiser Permanente parking deck on N. Washington St. and Park Ave. will be closed the holiday weekend for construction, but free parking is available at the George Mason Square Parking Garage (103 W. Broad St) and on side streets.

Road closures are as follows:

  • Park Ave. will be closed from 5:30 a.m. - 7 p.m. between N. Maple Ave. to N. Virginia Ave. (except for limited vendor traffic)
  • Little Falls St. will be closed from 5:30 a.m. - 7 p.m. between Park Ave. to Great Falls St.
  • Portions or all of certain streets along the route of the Don Beyer Fun Run (beginning at 9 a.m.) will be closed:
    • Little Falls St.
    • Great Falls St.
    • Pennsylvania Ave.
    • Fulton Ave.
    • N. Oak St.
    • Lincoln Ave.
    • N. West St.
    • Park Ave.
  • Parade staging areas will be closed to parked cars and traffic between 5:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. on sections of certain streets:
    • Lincoln Ave.
    • N. West St.
    • Highland Ave.
    • N. Oak St.
    • Greenwich St.
    • Park Ave.

Here are other openings/closings to be aware of on Memorial Day.

  • City Offices – closed
  • Libraries - closed Sunday and Monday
  • Liquor stores – all stores will close at 6 p.m.
  • Recreation – the Falls Church Community Center will be closed
  • City parks – Visit the city's website for more information
  • Metrorail – Information available at www.wmata.com
  • Metrobus – Information available at www.wmata.com
  • Parking at public garages – free
  • Falls Church City Public Schools and Administrative Offices – closed
  • State offices and courts – closed
