Falls Church Welcomes Memorial Day Parade Grand Marshal Nominations

The City of Falls Church is accepting nominations of people to serve as the grand marshal in this year's Memorial Day Parade.

FALLS CHURCH, VA — The City of Falls Church is accepting nominations of people to serve as the grand marshal of the city's 40th annual Memorial Day Parade.

“Do you know someone who has made a significant contribution to the community? Nominate them to be the Grand Marshal of the parade, and they will be escorted in a special parade vehicle and profiled by the Falls Church News-Press,” the city said.

The Falls Church Patch also hopes to write a profile of the person picked to be grand marshal.

Nominations for the grand marshal selection are due by March 7. They should include the person’s name and why that person deserves the honor of grand marshal.

Nominations should be sent to sawilliams@fallschurchva.gov.

Past honorees include Lindy Hockenberry (2021), Rob Donovan (2019), Midge Wang (2018), Barb Cram (2017), Kathy Halayko (2016) Kathy and Barry Buschow (2015), Sergeant Steve Rau (2014), Janet Haines and Audrey Luthman (2013), Harry Shovlin (2012), Howard Herman (2011), Edna Frady (2010) and Jessie Thackrey (2009).

Previous grand marshals are not eligible to serve again.

The city’s 40th annual Memorial Day Parade & Festival will take place on Monday, May 30. The day will kick off with a Memorial Day 3K fun run at 9 a.m. The festival will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the grounds of city hall and the community center.

A Memorial Day ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. at Veterans Plaza adjacent to the community center.

The parade will start at noon on May 30 on Park Avenue between West Street and Little Falls Street.
