Pedestrian Dies In Arlington Boulevard Crash In West Falls Church

Fairfax County's pedestrian fatalities in 2022 are close to double the amount at this time in 2021.

WEST FALLS CHURCH, VA — A pedestrian died Sunday in a crash on Arlington Boulevard in West Falls Church, according to Fairfax County Police.

The crash happened around 5:54 a.m. Sunday at Arlington Boulevard and Westmoreland Road. Detectives' early investigations determined the pedestrian was attempting to cross eastbound Arlington Boulevard from north to south. A 2003 Honda Accord heading east on Arlington Boulevard struck the pedestrian and continued. The vehicle went over two medians and struck multiple speed signs and a pole before stopping.

The pedestrian, identified as Tomas Escudero Machado, 76, of Falls Church, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police do not believe alcohol was a factor in the crash but are evaluating the driver's speed. The intersection does not have a traffic signal or a crosswalk across Arlington Boulevard. The speed limit in this area of Arlington Boulevard is 45 mph.

This was the 22nd pedestrian crash death in Fairfax County this year. By this time in 2021, there were 13 pedestrian fatalities.
