Smoking-Related Fire Wrecks Home In Pimmit Hills

Two people and their pet are displaced after a fire severely damaged their home.

A fire caused by smoking inflicted severe damage on a Pimmit Hills home last weekend, the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department says. Its two residents and a pet were displaced.

Around 1:33 a.m. on Saturday, April 14, units from Fairfax County and Arlington County responded to the house fire in the 1700 block of Pimmit Drive. The fire appeared to be coming from two sides of the home extending into the attic. Firefighters were able to quickly put out the blaze.

The residents had been sleeping when a neighbor alerted them to the fire. They were able to evacuate without injury.

Investigators traced back the fire to improperly discarded smoking materials in a trash can outside the home. The home had working smoke alarms, which did not activate due to the fire being on the exterior.

Damages to the home and two cars on the property are estimated at $101,164. Red Cross assistance was declined.
