BAILEY'S CROSSROADS, VA — A high school student was struck and killed in Bailey's Crossroads Wednesday, according to Fairfax County Police.

The juvenile was struck around 8:57 a.m. in a crosswalk at Columbia Pike and Barcroft View Terrace/Tyler Street, police spokesperson Dan Spital told reporters. The juvenile was crossing from east to west when a southbound vehicle on Columbia Pike struck the juvenile.

Spital said the victim was thrown 20 to 30 feet from the crosswalk. Despite lifesaving measure attempts by first responders and community members, the juvenile died of injuries.

The victim is a high school student at Fairfax County Public Schools, according to Spital. The student's school has not yet been identified, and police are coordinating with FCPS on the investigation and to provide services to the victim's family and friends.

The vehicle's driver remained on the scene. Investigators are working to determine the circumstances that led to the crash.

According to Spital, pedestrians have the right of way in the crosswalk. The crosswalk does not have a traffic signal, and drivers on Columbia Pike do not have a stop sign.

"This is certainly a dangerous intersection. It's a 35 mph zone," said Spital. "We are asking for motorists to please maintain that speed limit or even a little bit slower, but please be vigilant, please look around, especially when we're going through crosswalks."

Earlier this year, community groups have spoken out about pedestrian safety in the Bailey's Crossroads area, particularly the heavily-traveled roads of Leesburg Pike and Columbia Pike.

Spital said there will be traffic enforcement to address safety at the location.
