What's Open, Closed On MLK Jr. Day 2022 In Falls Church

FALLS CHURCH, VA — On Monday, residents and businesses in Falls Church will take a moment to honor the life and legacy of civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 17 is a federal holiday and a federally observed day of service.

The Tinner Hill Heritage Foundation is holding its annual Martin Luther King Day Jr. program on Jan. 17. The opening event will occur at 11 a.m. at the Tinner Hill Civil Rights Monument at South Washington St. and Tinner Hill Rd. At 11:30 a.m., U.S. Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia, Edwin B. Henderson II and others will offer remarks.

At noon on Monday, marchers will proceed from the monument, down South Washington St. to the Falls Church Episcopal Church. Signs along South Washington Street will honor the African Americans whose land was taken by eminent domain in 1922 to build a road — Lee Highway — to honor Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee, who fought to keep their ancestors enslaved.

At 1 p.m., a commemorative program featuring U.S. Rep. Don Beyer will be outdoors at the Falls Church Episcopal Church at 115 East Fairfax St.

The public is invited to the free events. Registration is requested but not required.

As a federal holiday, MLK Day could also affect the hours of government offices, libraries, public transportation, garbage pickup and other services in Falls Church.

Before you head out, here's a roundup of what's open and what's closed on Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Falls Church:

City of Falls Church government offices: City offices are closed Monday Jan. 17.

Fairfax County government offices: County government offices are closed on Jan. 17.

Courts: Arlington County courts are closed on Jan. 17. The Fairfax County General District Court, Circuit Court, and Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court will be closed on Jan. 17.

Falls Church City Public Schools: The school district is closed on Monday, Jan. 17.

Fairfax County Public Schools: The school district is closed on Monday, Jan. 17

Community Centers: The Falls Church Community Center is open from 8:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Jan. 17.

Virginia DMV: All DMV customer service centers will be closed on Jan. 17.

Fairfax Connector: On Jan. 17, Fairfax Connector will run holiday weekday service. For more information, visit www.fairfaxcounty.gov/connector.

Libraries: Mary Riley Styles Public Library is closed on Jan. 17. Due to concerns about the recent increase in COVID-19 transmissions in the D.C. area, all in-person library programs and use of library conference rooms are suspended through Jan. 31. Also, starting Jan. 10, the library changed its hours due to staffing issues and COVID-19 concerns. The new hours will be in place through February.

Metro: Metrorail and Metrobus typically run on a Saturday schedule on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Due to the continued impacts of the derailment and 7000-series investigation, Metrorail service continues to be reduced. Visit www.wmata.com/schedules/timetables for more information.

Post offices: Closed on Jan. 17.

Trash and recycling collection: City of Falls Church collections happen on Wednesdays. Private collection customers should check schedules with their hauler.

Trash and recycling centers: The I-66 Transfer Station (4618 West Ox Road) and the I-95 Landfill Complex (9850 Furnace Road) are open regular hours on Jan. 17.
